'Snow Patrol Influenced By Nirvana', Says Frontman Gary Lighthouse

Alternative rockers Snow Patrol have revealed how grunge legends Nirvana inspired them to form the band, with frontman Gary Lightbody admitting that Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic ‘became a massive part’ of his life.

Speaking to free newspaper Metro, Lightbody explained how he was massively influenced by seeing rock and grunge bands like Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers live when he was in his younger years, and it helped him form and mould the Snow Patrol that you see today.

Talking about his first gig, he said: “The Red Hot Chili Peppers supported by Rollins Band in Belfast's Ulster Hall in 1991. My second was Nirvana supported by The Breeders. That's a lineup that hasn't been topped. Nirvana became a massive part of my life and kick-started my desire to be in a band. People thought Northern Ireland was a scary place at the time, so any band that played Belfast before the ceasefire we ended up loving forever.”
