Billy Corgan, frontman of Chicago rockers The Smashing Pumpkins, has claimed that the music industry has been taken over by ’poseurs’ - who are all obsessed with being famous rather than making good music.
Corgan’s world-beating band are one of the highest-selling alternative rock bands of all time, with their album ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ classed as 9x platinum in the US. But, speaking to Billboard, he reckons that the scene – which he says started as musicians ‘trying to change the world’ – is simply full of ‘poseurs’ now – and that new bands are simply trying to get famous, comparing them to strippers who’ve just began their career.
“I was part of a generation that changed the world -– and it was taken over by poseurs. [Artists that break through now] have grown up thinking that being famous is the goal. Not to be respected - not to be dangerous. [Once you make that deal] you're just the fresh stripper.”
He went on to add that he reckons that if he began his career today, he’d have to ‘set himself on fire on YouTube’ to gain similar notoriety. What do you think of Corgan’s comments? Let us know in the comment section below.
