A drugs overdose at a techno/electronic dance music event is, admittedly, not the most uncommon of occurrences – but a rave held in a Zoo in Switzerland saw what was possibly the first drug-related Dolphin death the world has ever seen.
Shadow and Chelmers died after ravers at a weekend-long dance event decided it would be a good idea to share their Buprenorphine (a heroin substitute) with them. But, little did they know the drugs would unfortunately lead to the poor sea creatures suffering what Zookeeper Nadja Gasser described as ‘drawn out and painful deaths’.
Gasser, who works at the Connyland Zoo in Lipperswil, Switzerland, told the The Daily Mail: “When we went to start the dolphin training we noticed the same thing that had happened to Shadow was happening with Chelmers. He was drifting under the water and was clearly in trouble and so we jumped into the water.”
She continued: “We tried to hold him. He was shaking all over and was foaming at the mouth. Eventually we got him out of the water. His tongue was hanging out. He could hardly breathe. He was given adrenalin, but it didn't help. After an hour the dolphin died. It was horrendous. I have not been able to sleep since.”
Initially, investigators thought that the loud music from the techno festival may have damaged the dolphins, which could have led to their deaths – but a toxicology report has confirmed that the dolphins were killed by the foreign substances.
