Ben Gibbard Unveils New Track 'Teardrop Windows' From Upcoming Debut Solo LP - Listen Now

Monday, 05 November 2012 Written by Catherine Rea

With his debut solo Album “Former Lives” out on November 12th, Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service frontman Benjamin Gibbard has released his new video for “Teardrop Windows’. Gibbard is also set to play a special solo show at Union Chapel on December 3rd, performing a selection of material written over the course of his fifteen years in Death Cab For Cutie, though says the songs are “a side story, not a new chapter.”

As previously reported, the album is made up of songs that were written a while back but didn’t find a home until now, “these songs span eight years, three relationships, living in two different places, drinking then not drinking.”

As the first track from “Former Lives” to make its way online, “Teardrop Windows” is about Seattle’s Smith Tower. The video began as an unbashed attempt to, in Benjamin’s words, “write a Big Star inspired song”, though quickly became morphed into something completely different. The Smith Tower, built in 1914, was once a landmark on the Seattle skyline though has since been removed from the frame by the iconic Space Needle and other taller structures, “to me, it represents the things we take for granted when something newer, bigger and flashier comes into our lives”.

Directed and written by Tom Scharpling, “Teardrop Windows” sees the reinvention of Gibbard’s persona into a hilarious mini-movie, tracing his steps into his new ‘bad boy’ persona as he gets arrested, has a tattoo and wreaks havoc on the set of a reality television show.
