Calexico - Algiers (Album Review)

Ever since the release of debut album ‘Spoke’ in 1996, Calexico have been perfecting their unique, emotive blend of Latino-infused rock and with latest offering ‘Algiers’, they continue to evoke the darkest depths of your soul.

ImageFrom the sweeping, insouciant melody of ‘Fortune Teller’, breaking only for surprisingly inviting, celestial harmonies to an almost dejected ‘Para’ where a dramatic fanfare lifts the spirits somewhat, the Tucson duo certainly seem as intent as ever to seek out countless sounds and moods.

Whilst a meticulously coated ‘Maybe Monday’ tends to draw on the band's heavier, darker side, several infectious sounds of Mariachi make a customary appearance by way of a hip swaying ‘Puerto’ and the smooth Spanish spoken ‘No Te Vayas’.

Moving acoustic beauty ‘Hush’ is merely a reminder of Burns’ tremendous songwriting ability and musicianship. “We were born, like the branch to bend and not to break” he ponders as his heartwarming vocals soar above the stirring strings of this standout track.

‘Algiers’ may not embody as much of the raw emotion heard on previous albums such as ‘Feast of wire’, but Calexico’s seventh album only further confirms the band's eclectic sound shows no sign of abating any time soon.

'Algiers' is available now. You can catch the band performing some of their new material on their 2013 UK tour
