Arkaik Lines Up 'Cutting Edge' EP - Listen Now

Drum and bass is and always has been one of the most eclectic genres of music there is, and probably has more sub-genres than any other, either. Bass-heavy darkness seems to be the most prominent in the scene right now, with labels like Critical, Utopia Music, Neosignal, and Different constantly pushing the levels higher - or, so to speak, deeper.
This brand new EP from Farnham’s Arkaik consists of four tracks packed with thick subs, slick rolling percussion, and some quality vocals coming from Cardiff’s rising MC XL. Hitting shelves on February 4th, the ‘Cutting Edge’ EP is literally a ‘Game Changer’ in terms of its brilliance, and has already got heads talking weeks prior to its release.
Opening track ‘Cutting Edge’ starts with an intense bassline, which builds up into a rather filthy half-time track, with a perfectly placed vocal sample that I can guarantee will have your head nodding back and forth and pulling one of those ‘eughhh’ faces you see in raves all too often nowadays.
Though there are excerpts of MC XL’s vocals in a couple of the EP’s tracks, ‘Game Changer’ sees the pair properly coming together for a track which will no doubt go off at every rave lucky enough to blessed by its presence. After a curious build up, XL goes in at drop and absolutely smashes the dungeon-y steppa Arkaik crafted to accompany it. And, at the second drop, the game changes and the track turns into a naughty roller, which is once again greeted by XL’s razor sharp lyrics.
‘Lost’, the EP’s second track, is a wonderful combination of liquid drum and bass and his trademark murkiness, creating a melodic and moody roller that will most likely blend nicely with a range of tunes across the dnb spectrum. The EP’s final track ‘Serrated’ is another sub-filled adventure driven by its pounding percussion - it, like every other track on the release, had my headphones wobbling and vibrating around my head from start to finish - serious low-end pressure.
