J Dilla's Record Collection For Sale On EBay

The record collection of late hip-hop star J Dilla will be going up for sale, according to his mother Maureen 'Ma Dukes' Yancey.

J Dilla, who died in 2006 after suffering cardiac arrest related to the rare blood disease he lived with, placed his ‘records, personal test presses and audio master tapes’ into storage after his studio in Detroit flooded.

After his death, it was believed that his storage unit was lost - until last spring, when his mother reportedly found it. Now, as well as auctioning a portion of his collection, she’ll also be donating some his work to hip-hop museums - and even to labels and artists for ‘record release projects’.

A post on the star’s website reads: “Maureen Yancey is selling a portion of the record collection in the first of a series of weekly sales taking place on eBay. Buyers receive an LP from the collection of J Dilla, with a signed, numbered certificate from Maureen Yancey stating that the record is from this personal collection.

“The certificates are numbered with the plan of an online registry for Dilla fans to list their Dilla Collection LP. Buyers are welcomed to include the artist, title, and whether any tracks on the LP are known to have been sampled by Dilla. This registry is dependent on the sales of the limited amount of the collection and response from the fans.”

The eBay listing - which you can find here - reads: “All the J Dilla (Slum Village...etc.) test pressings, personal recordings, personal items, tapes, along with a large portion of the record collection are being held by Ma Dukes for inclusion in a possible future Hip Hop museum and upcoming record release projects.”

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the J Dilla Foundation - and if you manage to get randomly selected an extremely rare one, it may be worth a couple of quid!
