Mick Jagger and his Rolling Stones bandmates have opened up about the difficulty of playing their first gig without guitarist Brian Jones back in 1969, following yesterday’s announcement of their Hyde Park gig this summer.
Though the The Rolling Stones are one of, if not the biggest band in the world, they were truly rocked by the death of their friend and bandmate Brian Jones, who drowned in his pool a month after being asked to leave the group.
The Stones then played their first gig without Jones just days after the incident, performing in London’s Hyde Park to a massive crowd.
Speaking to Planet Rock about the experience, Keith Richards explained: “It was our first gig with Mick Taylor; Brian Jones having just deceased himself. It was about breaking in a new band in front of the biggest audience we had ever played to. At the same time everyone was on a downer ... it was about how to raise spirits.”
Mick Jagger added: “It was a difficult gig in that way, but once we started, it all sort of came together... I think we were a bit out of tune if I remember!”
The Rolling Stones return to the very same venue for a massive gig this July. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9am, and will sell out in minutes - so make sure you grab your pair as quick as you can. Check the dates and links below to find a pair through Stereoboard.
