British music history was made today, as the the number of singles downloaded in the UK hit one billion this week - and the billionth single sold was - you guessed it - Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’!
Nine years after legal music downloads became available here in Britain, the billionth single download was reached on Monday (April 8th) night, according to Official Charts Company. And, Adele’s super-selling single is probably the most fitting track to be #1,000,000,000 - it’s been ranked 5x platinum since it hit shelves in 2011, and is the best-selling single this side of 2010.
Not only that, it’s also the most downloaded single of all time, confirming that it’s only fair it be the one billionth download as well. The second most downloaded track is Maroon 5’s ‘Moves like Jagger’, which is closely followed by Gotye’s mega hit ‘Somebody I Used to Know’.
Martin Talbot, the managing director of the Official Charts Company, has said of the news: “The explosion in download sales over the past nine years means we are genuinely now living in the digital music age – with Adele as our queen! Over the nine years of legitimate digital music, more than 16 new tracks have sold one million copies, which emphasises just how popular digital music is in the modern age.”
