Business Secretary Vince Cable Retracts 'Immoral' One Direction Salary Comments

Tuesday, 16 April 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Business Secretary Vince Cable has taken to the press to clear up recent comments he made about X Factor boyband One Direction - which saw him describing the lads’ hefty salaries as ‘grossly immoral’.

Cable, Twickenham’s Liberal Democrat MP, appeared to have made a dig at the group after being asked what he thought about Harry Styles and co. raking in £5million each last year - something he claimed was ‘mad’, ‘downright insensitive’, and ‘grossly immoral’.

But, the politician went on to retract his comments - stating that he thought was actually referring to the salaries of chief executives, and not the five world-beating popstars. He told The Telegraph:

“I don’t want to attack One Direction; this is one particular group who are apparently very popular and very successful so I have nothing against them. But there is a general issue of Chief Execs in particular who are paid well beyond what can be justified in terms of the performance of their companies and that’s something the Government is now trying to address.”

Whether or not he actually meant the comments, there’s no denying that 1D have taken the world by storm in the past year and a half - and they aren’t stopping any time soon, either. If you’re a fan of the group, you have three more chances to catch the band live this month - check the dates and links below to see if you can find tickets to one of their remaining gigs!
