Cardiff Man Stabbed To Death In Row Over Lionel Richie Track

Tuesday, 04 June 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

A teenager stabbed a man to death in his home near Cardiff back in January - over a row about a Lionel Richie song.

Corey Thomas, 19, has since been handed a life sentence, with a minimum jail term of 10 years and 10 months, after he stabbed 45 year-old Andrew Male 18 times in his home on January 9.

Cardiff Crown Court heard how Thomas met Male outside a kebab shop after a night drinking, and asked him for a cigarette. After being told that Male had rolling tobacco at his house on Cardiff Road in Aberdare, the pair left together.

According to WalesOnline, Thomas and Male sat down to listen to some music, continue drinking and smoking. That was until a certain track - a Lionel Richie tune which remains unnamed - began to play. It was then that things turned sour.

The track reportedly had a ‘significant’ effect on Thomas, as it was played at his grandfather’s funeral - so, after seemingly getting emotional, Male decided to change the CD. Thomas then claimed that Male started getting ‘verbally aggressive’ and making ‘derogatory’ comments towards him, calling him ‘kiddo’.

After the pair continued to fight, Thomas became incensed and hit Mr Male, before grabbing a kitchen knife and plunging it into him. Claiming in court that Male was fighting back, he then proceeded to stab him multiple times, before leaving the house.

He then knocked the door of a neighbour at 3am, still holding the bloody knife, stating: "I’ve killed him. I think I’ve killed him. I had to stop him, he was coming at me. I started fighting, I couldn’t stop myself."

After police arrived at the scene and drove Thomas to the police station, he continued to make comments - and even went as far as to say that he’d kill everyone in prison should Male die. Thomas also said during the ride to the police station:

“Why did I have to go and kill him for? He was taking the piss out of my grandfather.”

“I just murdered somebody hahaha. I just murdered someone and laughed about it.”

After giving a no-comment interview at the station, he pleaded guilty at the first possible opportunity.
