Passion Pit Forced to Perform DJ Set After Chicago Storm Destroys Equipment

Monday, 02 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Passion Pit were forced to perform a last-minute DJ set during the weekend after a storm ruined ‘75%’ of their equipment and gear.

The band, fronted by Michael Angelakos, were lined up as the headline act for the Friday night of Chicago’s North Coast festival, but after a storm, which saw fans temporarily evacuated, ravaged their live equipment the band were forced to take to the decks rather than their keyboards.

Winds of 70mph ripped the covers protecting their equipment and ‘enormous amounts of rain’ destroyed them, with the band also having to DJ at other North American gigs on the weekend. They’re expected to make a return to live performing when they hit David Letterman’s show on Wednesday.

Apologising to fans for the lack of proper performance, the band said in a statement (via their website):

“Our gear was completely annihilated by weather. 70mph winds blew tarps and covers off of our equipment, allowing enormous amounts of rain to destroy a large portion of what we now know, as of today, to be approximately 75% of our gear.

“As a touring band that is proud to actually perform electro-pop as opposed to just pressing play, using many keyboards, both analog and digital, this is a nightmare we’ve had for quite some time. It’s almost incredible that it hasn’t happened already. Well, it happened, and now we’re doing our best to recover.”
