Birthday Bash: Stereoboard's Bestival Setlist

Monday, 02 September 2013 Written by Gavin Rees

Bestival turns 10 this weekend, and to celebrate reaching double figures they've assembled quite a cast of characters on the guest list.

The festival will take over Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight between September 5 and 8, with an eclectic bill catering for lovers of indie, hip hop, dance, rock, and those who just fancy a bit of a knees up.

Festival season may be winding down, but there are still plenty of potential highlights left in the next few weeks. On deck is Bestival, and here's our pick of just some of the possible show-stoppers who'll take the stage.

Fatboy Slim - Main Stage, Friday

Norman Cook was on hand when Bestival came kicking and screaming into the world back in 2004, thanks to Rob Da Bank and his wife, Josie, and the man known as Fatboy Slim will headline this year's Friday night with his Bestival Birthday Bash. You know the drill: big beats, big tunes and a few lusty singalongs.

Franz Ferdinand - Main Stage, Saturday

A few years ago, as tensions among the group bubbled up, Franz Ferdinand might have been those moody lads who stood off in the corner at your party and rolled their eyes when that 2manyDJs record came on. Not now. Their latest album, 'Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action' is a massive return to form and a record that contains some of the most downright danceable tracks they've ever produced.

Elton John - Main Stage, Sunday

A living legend, Sir Elton will headline Sunday night at this year's event, bringing with him some genuine, dyed-in-the-wool classic pop songs for a UK festival exclusive performance. This could be an absolute masterstroke from the organisers, and it's all set to be a spectacular end to proceedings.

The Roots - Main Stage, Saturday

One of the most consistently challenging and interesting collectives in hip hop, the Roots will land at Bestival just prior to the release of their hotly-anticipated collaboration with Elvis Costello. Led by ?uestlove and the magnetic Black Thought, this is a rare chance to see a band who have been on the very cutting edge of modern music for the best part of 20 years. Which is nice.

Chlöe Howl - Replay, Friday

One of the most refreshing, different names to emerge on the pop scene for some time, Howl will bring her emotionally stark, yet catchy, numbers to Bestival on Friday. In a recent interview with the Guardian, Howl described her sound as 'steak and kidney pop' and there will certainly be plenty to go around this weekend.

Squarepusher - Big Top, Friday

One of electronic music's leading lights, and a truly unique live experience, Squarepusher will take things to a weird place this weekend. Tom Jenkinson's abrasive, playful take on things always comes complete with something visually arresting, making this a great opportunity to see something you won't forget in a hurry.

Jaws - Replay, Sunday

Emerging from the same Birmingham scene as Swim Deep and Peace, Jaws are slowly but surely developing a fine following. They have taken something of a magpie approach to their indie sound, with elements of Manchester's leading lights fused with the fuzzy alt-rock that permeated American college towns 20 years ago. Dig in, and see what the fuss is about.

London Grammar - Replay, Friday

London Grammar's sound is huge. It's pop music in widescreen. With Hannah Reid's deep, soulful vocals and some densely crafted songs they've won comparisons to the xx, but there's something a little sunnier about this trio. They invaded the mainstream early on this year by duetting with dance titans Disclosure, who, funnily enough, are also on the bill at Bestival this weekend.

Bestival UK & Ireland Tour Dates are as follows

Thu September 5th 2013 - NEWPORT Robin Hill Country Park
Fri September 6th 2013 - NEWPORT Robin Hill Country Park
