Labels are awful things. Klaxons, then, must have been particularly happy when ‘New Rave’ went the way of Old Yeller. The band have maintained a relatively low profile since the release of their underwhelming second effort, ‘Surfing The Void’, four years ago, but ‘Love Frequency’ is set to change all that.
Free from the scene they helped to cultivate, this record finds Klaxons revisiting the sort of melodic, expansive material that made their debut, ‘Myths Of The Near Future’, such a critical and commercial success.
That’s not to say that it’s perfect, of course. For those who found little to love in the band’s early hits, ‘Love Frequency’ will simply be tuned out. But, there are several moments where their quest to discover an astral plain beyond the indie disco bears fruit.
A huge, funk-inflected hook emerges from dense synths on A New Reality, while Show Me A Miracle slows the pace to a crawl to foreground its future-soul chorus and nagging riff. The Dreamers, meanwhile, evolves from Tame Impala stomp into delicate, ethereal piano and swirling vocals.
On the other side of the coin are the times when Klaxons push things a little too far. Liquid Light is the best hold music to ever see release on a major album, while the infectious thud of Children Of The Sun is undone by lyrics best suited for display in shops that stock mood rings: “We’re the children of the sun, we came to be and to become.”
Broadly speaking, though, Klaxons have produced an album that should push them back to the head of the indie queue. There was always something endearingly ‘out there’ about their music, a dose of personality that their sometime rivals could never quite replicate, and ‘Love Frequency’ has bags of it.
