Meghan Trainor - Title (Album Review)

Friday, 30 January 2015 Written by Gavin Rees

Your enjoyment of ‘Title’, Meghan Trainor’s soon-to-be-massive new record, will depend almost entirely on whether you really are All About That Bass. That superhit is the first song proper here and its giddy fusion of doo-wop with up-to-the-minute pop-R&B and mixed messages sets a distinctive tone for what’s to follow.

Next off the bus is Dear Future Husband, a song similarly indebted to popping double bass and sugary, awkward wordplay: “I’ll be sleeping on the left side of the bed, open doors for me and you might get some...kisses.” Walkashame, the title track, Lips Are Movin’ and Credit are content to follow a similar blueprint.

Trainor’s fusion of two genres that, on the surface at least, appear broadly incompatible sometimes works through the sheer weight of hooks she’s able to pour forth.

3am and Like I’m Gonna Lose You, a collaboration with John Legend, are elevated above their saccharine origins come chorus-time and both demonstrate just how comfortable she is penning smart, chart-friendly pop tunes.

But, one foray into hip hop is not much fun at all. Bang Dem Sticks, which finds “M-Train” with a drummer “sicker than swine flu”, will take three minutes and one second of your life from you. You will never get it back.

‘Title’ is, above all else, uneven, with its highs matched beat for beat by its lows. Trainor’s already big business, but her reinvention after a string of indie releases suggests there are still creases to be ironed out.
