Prodigy (pictured left) of Mobb Deep has died aged 42.
A publicist for the hip-hop duo confirmed the news in a statement to Rolling Stone, saying that the American rapper, born Albert Johnson, died on Tuesday in a Las Vegas hospital.
Mobb Deep had just completed a show in Vegas when Johnson was hospitalised due to complications arising from his sickle-cell anaemia, which he had suffered from since birth. An exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
A number of musicians have paid tribute to Prodigy, among them fellow Mobb Deep member Havoc, Lil Wayne, Action Bronson, Nas and Ghostface Killah.
Mobb Deep formed in 1992 in Queens, New York and are considered one of the most influential and pioneering hip-hop duos of the past 20 years. Known for their hardcore delivery and dark lyrics, Mobb Deep were perhaps best recognised for their albums ‘Hell on Earth’ and ‘The Infamous’. Despite a brief break up, the duo returned to celebrate 20 years together and put out a new album, ‘The Infamous Mobb Deep’, in 2014.
Prodigy began his career as a solo artist in 2000 when he put out 'H.N.I.C.', which he followed with a series of solo LPs, mixtapes and two collaborative records with The Alchemist. His final solo album, 'Hegelian Dialectic (The Book of Revelation)', was released in January.
