Eight years after bandmate Prodigy’s death, ‘Infinite’ arrives as both a memorial and mission statement: the final chapter of Mobb Deep’s towering Queensbridge saga. It’s a project that could easily have been exploitative or patchy but Havoc — alongside longtime collaborator The Alchemist — treats it with a degree of reverence.
What results isn’t the duo’s best work, but it’s an authentic and unexpectedly cohesive posthumous record that keeps the torch burning without smothering it.Havoc’s production carries much of the emotional weight, splitting duties with Alchemist across 15 tracks that feel surprisingly lived-in.
The drums are dusty, the loops are cold, and the basslines have that familiar, bristling Queensbridge bite.
Against The World opens on a soul-chopped high, while Mr. Magik delivers classic Mobb gallows humour as they trade punchlines with veteran ease. On My Era, Prodigy’s delivery echoes through the mix with chilling gravity.
The chemistry between the pair remains unmistakable, even when stitched together from old verses and fresh instrumentals. In that regard, the album resembles the 2023 Wham! Netflix documentary where Andrew Ridgeley’s (still living) narration scaffolds the narration of George Michael (not still living).
The features are a bit of a mixed bag — Big Noyd, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah slot neatly into the Mobb mythology, Clipse and Nas feel like label-mandated cameos — and there are some mixing quirks and gloss to undercut the rawness that defined Mobb Deep’s best work. But, even then, we’re never in the realms of cringe. It may not touch ‘The Infamous’ or ‘Hell on Earth’ but ‘Infinite’ is a solid, soulful, and grimly poetic last word from the corner kings of Queensbridge.
