Kesha - Rainbow (Album Review)

Wednesday, 23 August 2017 Written by Milly McMahon

To understand ‘Rainbow’, look to its lead single, Praying. In the shadow of Kesha’s well documented (and ongoing) legal battle with producer Dr Luke following allegations of sexual and emotional abuse, the song is a gospel-fuelled salute to a new artistic era.

An incredibly moving and soul-stirring piece of music, Praying illustrates Kesha spitting raw pain and aggression, liberated though each defiant and impactful lyric. It is an iconic anthem in this context as Kesha unites her critics and fans through passion and power, pointing towards hope. “Some things only God can forgive,” she sings. As the song ends, she adds: “I hope you find your peace. Falling on your knees, prayin'.”

On Learn to Let Go Kesha sings about moving on, acknowledging her journey but signalling goodbye to that past, infusing upbeat optimism into the similarly summery feel of the LP.

Bastards, meanwhile, combines flecks of country and hand claps as she goads her haters. She tells us to stay strong and overcome the kind of judgement that can stifle greatness. Where before she sang about getting drunk and living like a rock star, her outlook now is more focused on resilience.

Woman is a kick ass feminist anthem: that which suffocated her has led to the revelation that she needs only her friends and spirit to enjoy life. Hymn also revels in the gift of youth, chiming that life is happening now.

A note also on Kesha’s voice. On ‘Rainbow’, her powerful vocal range is at its best. Whereas previous LPs found her warped by autotuning effects and overbearing chorus instrumentals, the production here illuminates what a great performer she is.

What had brought so much self doubt and dysfunction to her life has metamorphosed here into a thing of power and elegance. ‘Rainbow’ acknowledges how moments of utter darkness can be transformed through self belief.
