Weaves - Wide Open (Album Review)

Weaves’ debut hit home thanks to a stack of offbeat melodies and vocalist Jasmyn Burke’s wonderfully quirky vocals, which amounted to a diverse, genre-defying affair. ‘Wide Open’ finds them treading their own path once again, but this time the rough edges have been smoothed out even as the eccentricity is dialled up to 10.

Throughout Burke is self-assured and she truly flourishes when the record’s instrumentation is stripped back. On Scream, for example, she combines with throat singer Tanya Tagaq as the pair push a palpable sense of urgency.

It is not just Burke who has evolved as a performer, though. The backing created by guitarist Morgan Waters, drummer Spencer Cole and bassist Zach Bines is wildly varied, borrowing influences from over-the-top pop, punk, indie and funk. There have always been many strings to Weaves’ bow, but here the execution is more precise and impressive than we have seen previously.

On Slicked no one instrument takes the lead, with drum fills stealing as much focus as guitar riffs, while Law and Panda is a more traditionally guitar-led cut. The title track, though, pares things down to complement the vulnerability of Burke’s lyrics.

‘Wide Open’ sees the singer ditching the metaphors in favour of candid commentary. “I was a stranger inside of my body, I want to perish down on my knees,” she sings as the opening line of the album. The result is a record that is considered, but also brazen and musically unique. Weaves are in a league of their own.
