Ed King has died at the age of 68.

According to a statement posted to his Facebook page, the the guitarist died at home in Nashville, Tennessee on August 22. “We thank his many friends and fans for their love and support of Ed during his life and career,” it read.

A founding member of the Los Angeles psych-rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock, with whom he sent Incense and Peppermints to the top of the US charts in 1967, King is perhaps best known as a bassist and guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

He played on the legendary southern rock band’s first three LPs, ‘(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)’, ‘Second Helping’, and ‘Nuthin’ Fancy’, and co-wrote one of their signature songs, Sweet Home Alabama. King was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band in 2006.

“I’ve just found out about Ed’s passing and I’m shocked and saddened,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Gary Rossington wrote on Twitter. “Ed was our brother, and a great Songwriter and Guitar player. I know he will be reunited with the rest of the boys in Rock & Roll Heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and his family.”
