Damon Albarn's Africa Express Confirm Spring Concert As Part Of First London Borough Of Culture Year

Friday, 15 February 2019 Written by Jon Stickler

Africa Express, the project of Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, will play a one-off show in London this spring.

Also featuring Western and African musicians, the collective will perform at Leytonstone's Wanstead Flats in East London on March 29.

The show has been set up as part of the celebrations supporting the first London Borough of Culture year, with tickets on general sale at 10am on February 18. Albarn said of the concert:

"Growing up in a multi-racial community like Leytonstone had a profound effect on me as a boy, being so near to magical places such as Epping Forest… The Wanstead Flats helped define who I am, so this is a great honour personally."

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan added:

"Despite London's position as an international culture capital, too many young Londoners do not have access to our city's exceptional cultural institutions and feel unable to get involved. London Borough of Culture is a real gamechanger – it puts culture at the heart of local communities and ensures young Londoners can access the transformative power of art and music. Africa Express: The Circus will be a spectacular show, bringing together artists from across the world in Waltham Forest."

Albarn and band will be joined by a full supporting bill for the show, titled Africa Express: The Circus, including Batida, Django Django, Wolf Alice vocalist Ellie Rowsell, Gruff Rhys, Imarhan, Joan As Police Woman, Mista Silva, Moonchild Sanelly, Morena Leraba, Muzi, Onipa, Rokia Traoré, Sibot and the Good, and the Bad and the Queen — comprised of Albarn, Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong and drummer Tony Allen.

Africa Express Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows
