Frank Turner has announced a new album.
'No Man's Land' was inspired by women who throughout history have been overlooked. Turner recorded it solely with female musicians and production was handled by 2018 Producer of the Year winner Catherine Marks.
“It’s bringing together my two main interests in life, which have always been separate from each other - history and songwriting," said Turner. “These stories should have been told already. And I suspect if they were men they would be better known."
Addressing those who may say it's not his place to be writing about these women, he continued: "It’s not telling anyone what to do or how to live or how to be. If there was a crowded field of people writing songs about Princess Kassiani then I would see the argument for me bowing out, but there isn’t. No-one else is writing these songs right now. That’s why I want to share these stories.”
The follow up to 2018's 'Be More Kind' will arrive on August 16, while the first episode of its accompanying 13-part podcast series, Tales From No Man's Land, begins today (July 3). Head here to find out more about the latter and below for the record's first single, Sister Rosetta.
The folk-punk track is about the American guitarist and singer-songwriter Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who was popular throughout the 1930s and '40s, and who Turner refers to in the lyrics as "godmother of rock and roll, the original sister of soul."
'No Man's Land' tracklist:
- Jinny Bingham’s Ghost

- A Perfect Wife
