Angel Olsen Posts Title Track Of New Album 'Whole New Mess'

Tuesday, 28 July 2020 Written by Huw Baines

Angel Olsen has announced her new album.

‘Whole New Mess’ is the stripped down companion piece that was part of the conversation around last year’s ‘All Mirrors’. It’s out on August 28 through Jagjaguwar and was recorded with Michael Harris at The Unknown, the church turned studio created by Mount Eerie’s Phil Elverum and producer Nicholas Wilbur.

“I hadn’t been to The Unknown, but I knew about its energy. I wanted to go sit with the material and be with it in a way that felt like a residency,” Olsen says. “I didn’t need a lot, since it was just me and a guitar. But I wanted someone else there to hold me accountable for trying different things.”

Nine of its songs share DNA with ‘All Mirrors’ tracks, but Olsen points out that they’re not demos. ‘Whole New Mess’, a press release adds, “is its own record with its own immovable mood.” Stream director Ashley Connor’s video for the title track below.
