Will Young Plots September Acoustic UK Tour In Support Of New Album 'Crying On The Bathroom Floor'

Monday, 26 April 2021 Written by Jon Stickler

Will Young has returned with details of his new album.

The follow-up to 2019's 'Lexicon' is called 'Crying On The Bathroom Floor' and will arrive on August 6 via Cooking Vinyl. It'll feature reinterpretations of hits from some of the singer's favourite female alt-pop artists, including tracks by Robyn, Lykke Li, London Grammar, Solange, and Sky Ferreira. Young said:

"I've always enjoyed singing other people's songs. There is a liberation to it. It's how I feel when I approach a script. I have reverence for the piece of art and the artist who created it."

He added: "After 18 years of recording and performing a lot of original material, I loved the idea of creating an album that celebrates some of the modern female artists I so admire in pop. In today’s times it’s so much easier and accepted to occupy other genders, ideas and explore new avenues. I wanted to understand what it might be like to sing their lyrics;  a song about a boy called Daniel; crying on the bathroom floor, feeling like Elizabeth Taylor. This is not a covers album as such, well certainly not in the standard way. I wanted to bring songs from female artists who I admire into a new arena. I wanted to work with Richard X again and create a true pop record."

As a preview, an elegant rework of the haunting 2009 Bat For Lashes tune, Daniel, has been shared as the record's first single. Head below to view its accompanying video directed by Andrew John "W.I.Z." Whiston, along with the full-length's artwork and tracklist.

Young will support the LP's release with six acoustic shows in September, including stops in Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, and London, where he'll play two dates at EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney). Tickets go on general sale at 9am on April 29.

The 42-year-old chart-topper is due to headline South Tyneside Festival in July, subject to COVID-19 restrictions. He's also set to top the bill at the rearranged Kew The Music concert series in 2022.
