Perfume Genius Announces New Album 'Ugly Season' And Accompanying Short Film

Perfume Genius, real name Mike Hadreas, has announced a new album.
'Ugly Season' will arrive on June 17 via Matador Records, accompanied by a short film created by Hadreas and visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite, featuring music from the record. It'll utilise immersive multidisciplinary methods that combine live video, 3-D animation, drawing and print-making.
"This project is the genesis of a whole new direction that I’m taking, one that I’ve been thinking about within this endemic culture, since 2020," says Satterwhite. "Mike and I are both writing scripts. My visual narrative serendipitously mirrors the lyrical direction in his music; it’s a rare, like-minded bond. It’s a creation myth. How do you architecturally mold and render an idealized version of utopia? It’s about making something that you desire so beyond your scope that it’s hard to grapple into a concrete form."
Produced by Perfume Genius and Grammy Award-winning producer and frequent collaborator Blake Mills, the record was created alongside Hadreas' long-time partner Alan Wyffels. It'll include the already released compositions Pop Song and Eyes In The Wall, along with other material written to accompany The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance piece by the indie-pop artist and choreographer Kate Wallich.
The immersive project was performed at residencies in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York City and Boston during 2019.
Perfume Genius recently kicked off his North American tour, with dates running through to early April. Tickets are on sale now.
