Hard Life Announce New Album 'Onion' With First Single Othello

Friday, 11 April 2025 Written by Jon Stickler

Hard Life have returned with a new single, Othello.

The hip hop-infused alt-pop track was written and recorded by frontman Murray Matravers in Japan after a turbulent period of change for the band formerly known as Easy Life.

Produced by Taka Perry, who Matravers connected with while travelling, it ushers in a new chapter for the Leicester band, and marks their first new music since last summer's Tears, which referenced the group's public legal dispute with easyGroup in 2023. Matravers commented:

"Othello is a pun on the board game, but also draws from the play’s themes of trust, identity, and the destructive forces of unchecked emotions like jealousy. Relationships - whether personal, romantic, or professional - are rarely straightforward, and after making difficult decisions you sometimes cross this threshold of no return.

"Othello captures that moment of uncertainty, where someone leaves your life, and there’s a profound emptiness that takes over as you wallow in the unknown."

Under their Easy Life moniker, the band put out two studio albums, the latest being 2022's 'Maybe In Another Life...'.

They'll release their first Hard Life album, titled 'Onion', through Island EMI on July 18. Check out a teaser trailer for the project below.
