Foo Fighters have performed their first show with their new drummer.
The surprise comeback show at the 900-capacity Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California, on Saturday (September 13) saw frontman Dave Grohl formally introducing Ilan Rubin, best known for his work with Nine Inch Nails. Amid a 25-song set that included a number of deep cuts, Grohl said:
"Everybody else has said it, I finally get the opportunity to say, ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome, the most badass motherfucker, Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters. It’s official."
Taking to social media after the performance—Foo Fighters' first proper show in just over a year—Rubin wrote: "Last night with Foo Fighters could not have been a better time. After keeping my head down for a couple wild months and throwing myself into the material, that first show was such an incredible release of energy. I’ve been taken aback by all the positivity and support, and I just wanted to say thanks! Excited for all the volume and sweat that lies ahead."
Rubin steps into the role, swapping groups with Josh Freese, who joined the Foos in 2023 after the death of long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins. The move marks Freese's second stint with Nine Inch Nails, having previously played with the Trent Reznor-led band from 2005 to 2008 before being replaced by Rubin. The group are currently touring North America with their Peel It Back Tour, which wraps up later this week with two dates at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Head here for tickets.
Foo Fighters released their most recent studio album, and first without Hawkins, 'But Here We Are', in 2023. They recently took to social media to invite fans to "assemble" and subscribe to their newsletter for, "info you won't want to miss... just sayin'...". They returned with Today's Song, their first new music in nearly two years, in July.
They'll play another last-minute, intimate gig tonight (September 15) at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California, before dates in Asia next month, and Mexico in November.
