R&B singer D'Angelo has died aged 51.
The four-time Grammy-winning artist, known for pioneering neo-soul, a genre blending soul and R&B with influences from funk, jazz, hip hop and rock, passed away on Tuesday (October 14) after privately suffering from pancreatic cancer. His family said in a statement:
"The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.
"We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world."
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, the influential singer rose to prominence in the mid-'90s with his 1995 debut album 'Brown Sugar', which featured his first Top 10 single, Lady. He dropped a second album, 'Voodoo', in 2000, followed by his third and final LP, 'Black Messiah', in 2014.
Following news of his death, tributes have flooded social media, including posts from former collaborators and artists he inspired, including Beyoncé, Nile Rodgers, and Lauryn Hill.
