Sorry - Cosplay (Album Review)

Monday, 05 January 2026 Written by Jeremy Blackmore

Sorry’s third album is the sound of a band fearlessly throwing off the shackles and refusing to be pigeonholed as Asha Lorenz and Louis O’Bryen explore a diverse and overlapping range of styles, recorded with various collaborators in multiple studios. The production on ‘Cosplay’ veers from lo-fi to full-on multilayered anthems.

In the past, critics have drawn attention to the post-punk, grunge, jazz and trip-hop influences of their earlier work and while ‘Cosplay’ contains all those influences, its big choruses and chunky guitars suggest it’s perhaps best approached simply as pop, the band’s own preferred descriptor.

As they hop from the dreamy, bubblegum sounds to heavier, darker, unsettling tones, it’s an adventurous roller coaster ride. If, at times, it threatens to come off the rails, that’s part of the fun.

Echoes, a song about getting lost in love, opens the album with chiming guitar and looping chorus before crunchy guitars build to a crescendo.

Sorry adopt a more menacing tone with Jetplane, inspired by and built around a reverberated sample from Guided By Voices’ Hot Freaks. Lorenz’s vocals are far less cutesy here, with a stuttering delivery conveying dark humour. Love Posture, meanwhile, offers an animalistic take on love, underpinned by a rumbling bassline and eerie, ghostlike backing vocals.

They slow the pace with Antelope, which begins as a gentle, folky reflection on romance, before transitioning to a dark, discordant jazzy climax. It’s a mood that segues neatly into the woozy, psychedelic Candle, where direct, visceral lyrics subvert Bob Dylan’s Blowing In The Wind.

The instantly catchy Today Might Be The Hit is a raucous slice of garage-rock with a Rocky Horror vibe, while Waxwing finds Sorry gutting the hook from Toni Basil’s 1982 hit Mickey alongside duelling discordant guitars and synths. It’s something they also deploy on live favourite Jive, creating a disconcerting sense of euphoria to close the album.
