Fred Again..’s ‘USB002’ is a massive undertaking. Signalling his status as one of the world’s pre-eminent DJs, it pulls together cuts from his set into an upbeat, high-energy collection of club-tested beats. It’s versatile, with an assortment of massive artists featured across its whopping 34 songs, but the fluid project’s current incarnation doesn’t offer anything unique or particularly fresh.
I Luv U, featuring Wallfacer, is fast-paced dubstep with a low-lying beat that’s almost sinister — think 3am in a packed out club that could go one way or another. Underlining the breadth of sounds here, Solo changes the mood completely, with Fred Again..’s signature bass doing some heavy lifting as Blanco’s verses conjure the feeling of summer raving.
Beto’s Horns is a standout. It’s the most cohesive thing here, with pristine layering and a slow build that increases the atmosphere’s potency bit by bit. It’s club-forward, with drops that feel cathartic rather than aggressive.
HARDSTYLE 2, with KETTAMA and Shady Nasty, is also worth checking out, as is Places to Be, starring Anderson .Paak and CHIKA.
In the negatives column you’ll find the incoherent Skrillex/Flowdan tie up Rumble, which is grating and out of place. It doesn’t feel like a floor-filler when compared with the best of ‘USB002’, but that likely speaks to the fact that this is a decent package from Fred Again.. — it’s exciting to see where this whole endeavour goes next.
