Iron and Wine, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Sam Beam, have laid out plans for their eighth studio album.
'Hen's Teeth' is set to arrive through Sup Pop on February 27 and is described in a press release as "a sibling record, of sorts" to 2024's Grammy-nominated LP 'Light Verse'.
It was created across a number of recording sessions in Los Angeles over the past few years with studio owner and engineer Dave Way behind the control desk, whose credits include Fiona Apple, Jakob Dylan and Sheryl Crow.
It brings together familiar collaborators, including David Garza, Sebastian Steinberg, Tyler Chester, Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, Kyle Crane and Paul Cartwright, alongside new contributions from Grammy-winning Americana trio I'm With Her, who provide harmonies on the previously unveiled track Robin's Egg, and Wait Up.
Arden, one of Beam's daughters, makes her recording debut with backing vocals on Roses, Singing Saw, Defiance, Ohio, and Grace Notes.
The record's title comes from something unexpected, like the creation of the album itself, which came about from time spent with these musicians in a creative space. Sam said:
"To me it suggests the impossible. Hen’s teeth do not exist. And that’s what this record felt like: a gift that shouldn’t be there but it is. An impossible thing but it’s real.”
Alongside details of the record, Iron and Wine have shared the folky new track In Your Ocean, which pairs softly picked acoustic guitars with Beam's warm and gentle vocal delivery. It comes with a Spencer Kelly-directed video you can check out below.
Iron & Wine will support the LP with Australian and New Zealand tour dates beginning in late February, followed by North American shows in the spring, with performances in the UK still to be announced. Tickets are on sale now.
Last year, Iron and Wine teamed up with Band Of Horses' Ben Bridwell for a covers EP, 'Making Good Time'.
