Mastodon Preview 'Marrow Deep' With New Single In The Ruins

Mastodon have shared another single from their recently announced ninth album.
Inspired by the impact of Hurricane Helene and the devastation it caused bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders and his family, the cathartic, emotionally-charged In The Ruins turns loss into a thunderous expression of resilience.
Combining crushing guitar riffs with the band's trademark progressive metal edge, the track arrives alongside an animated video by VFX studio Hey Beautiful Jerk that follows a one-eyed creature named Frank through flooded landscapes, reflecting the song's lyrics. The video's creator commented:
"The initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for ‘In The Ruins’ came to me when I was in the ER for 10 hours with the worst eye infection of my life. The pain was so bad it felt like my eye was revolting and wanted to escape my head. I had just talked to Brann about the meaning of the song and how it was inspired by his and Troy's recent losses. The expression ‘picking up the pieces’ came to me and I sketched a very rough version of Frank on my phone, capturing the idea as fast as I could before my eye wanted to escape my face once again."
The song serves as the third preview of 'Marrow Deep', following earlier tracks Snakes For Dinner, featuring Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, and Your Ghost Again, which pays tribute to late Mastodon guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor's late mother.
The Grammy-winning Atlanta metal giants announced the long-awaited follow-up to 2021's 'Hushed and Grim' last month, confirming its August 28 release via Loma Vista Recordings. Head here for more details.
