Mastodon have returned with a new single and details of a North American tour for the fall.
Released via Loma Vista Recordings, Your Ghost Again marks the Grammy-winning Atlanta metallers' first new music since the departure and death of co-founding guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds last year and the loss of drummer Brann Dailor's mother.
Produced by Patrik Berger, known for his work with Taylor Swift and Robyn, alongside guitar mastermind of Converge Kurt Ballou, the track was written during an incredibly tough time. It serves as a tribute to Hinds and features shared vocals from vocalist-bassist Troy Sanders and Dailor and crushing guitar riffs from Bill Kelliher and new member Nick Johnston, balancing heaviness and emotion for one of band's most powerful recordings yet. Dailor explained:
"For me, ‘Your Ghost Again’ is about when you lose somebody that’s close to you that you existed with for most of your life—or your whole life. It’s those moments when you’re in those familiar places that you’ve always been with that person, and then, after they’re gone, you see them out of the corner of your eye, and it makes you sad because they’re not there. When we were in the studio recording, I kept seeing Brent. I’d see him on my right holding the guitar because that’s where he’d usually be. It’s the same with my mom: I keep seeing her. And you get a little jolt of excitement because you think you’re actually seeing them, but then you remember they’re not here and it takes you down a notch. So, it’s these big relationships for me that became the subject matter of the song. I was just singing about what I was seeing, and I was seeing ghosts."
Mastodon have also announced The Poisonous Weapons Tour across North America, featuring support from Deafheaven and Alcest. The run will kick off on September 16 in Orlando and wrap up on October 24 with a performance at Sick New World Texas.
The tour will follow the band's ongoing run of European festivals and headline dates with Loathe, which continue with a show in Prague, Czech Republic, tomorrow (June 3). The run also includes an appearance at the UK's Download festival in Leicestershire on June 14, as well as dates in France supporting thrash legends Anthrax.
Tickets for the North American tour dates go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday. Tickets for their summer shows are on sale now.
Mastodon released their most recent studio album, 'Hushed And Grim', in 2021. In 2024, they celebrated the 15th anniversary of their album 'Crack The Skye' with the release of a deluxe edition, and teamed up with Lamb Of God for Floods Of Triton in September of that year.
