Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has died aged 51.

The musician, who co-founded the Grammy-winning Atlanta metal band in 2000 but departed in March, was killed in southeast Atlanta at around 11:35pm on Wednesday (August 20) when his Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck by a BMW SUV that reportedly failed to yield while making a turn.

In a statement posted to social media, Hinds' former Mastodon bandmates — Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor — wrote:

"We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief... Last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent."

Hinds grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He appeared on all eight of Mastodon's studio albums, from their 2002 debut 'Remission' through to 2021's 'Hushed And Grim'. The band's most recent release is the 2024 Lamb Of God collaboration, Floods Of Triton.

Many musicians have been paying tribute to Hinds on social media, including Trivium's Matt Heafy, Queens of The Stone Age, William Duvall of Alice In Chains, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Machine Head, Tool, Opeth and more.
