Download Festival Scoops Best Event Award at Metal Hammer Golden Gods

Download Festival has won Best Event at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards for the second year running.

Only a day after this year’s festival came to an end, the organisers of Download have collected the prize, which is voted for by Metal Hammer readers. The event was up against other rock festivals Bloodstock and Sonisphere, as well as the recent Rage Against The Machine free concert in Finsbury Park.

Download previously won Best Event at the same awards ceremony for last year’s festival, which was headlined by Def Leppard, Slipknot and a reformed Faith No More. Promoter Andy Copping accepted the award on Monday night in London’s IndigO2 venue.

Download 2010 was another huge success for the organisers, who had managed to book three of their biggest headliners yet: Aerosmith, Rage Against The Machine and AC/DC. The latter band even brought their own stage to the event.

Other acts included Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots and supergroup Them Crooked Vultures. The weather was mostly perfect for a festival weekend. The only bad point came late in the afternoon on the last day, when there was heavy rain for several hours. However, it failed to spoil the mood and cleared up in time for Aerosmith's Sunday night headlining set.

In a recent interview with Stereoboard, a few weeks before Download took place, Andy Copping announced that this year’s festival was proving to be the most popular yet: “We sold-out at Download 2009 for the first time, with seventy-five-thousand people. We’ve surpassed that figure already and we’ve still got three weeks to go.”

He also confirmed that plans were underway for next year’s event: “I can’t give anything away, but I’m already talking to three potential headliners. I always have a wish list. I’ll work to try and get the best line-up that I can.”
