Thebe Neruda Kgositsile - or, as you probably know him better, Earl Sweatshirt - is an American rapper and producer hailing from Los Angeles, California. Best known as a member of world-famous hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA, or Odd Future), he's also found fame as a star in his own right, and is signed to Columbia Records.
First picking up major recognition for his first mixtape 'Earl' in 2010, he was then sent to boarding school by his mother, from which he only returned at the age of 18 - but now, he's finally back and his delivered his debut album 'Doris'. He and the rest of the Odd Future gang are renowned for their livewire performances and onstage antics, and Sweatshirt himself definitely knows how to entertain a crowd - don't miss his sets at Wild Life and Parklife in 2015, or at one of four UK gigs warming-up for them in June!

The theory that depression makes for good art is long-standing, and its proponents can certainly point to numerous examples, but it should also be a source of unease from an observer's perspective. If unchecked, the invisible link between artist and listener (or creator and beneficiary) can feel exploitative or voyeuristic. The behaviour of a small minority of entitled social media users, who complained when Earl Sweatshirt cancelled a European tour earlier this year following the death of his father, was just one illustration of this dynamic.
