Beginning his career in 1959, McKellen has over the years been the recipient of six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BIF Award, two Saturn Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and two Critics' Choice Awards. He has also received two Oscar nominations, four BAFTA nominations and five Emmy Award nominations.

McKellen's career spans genres ranging from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men, but his list of credits spans widely across film and television, including roles in Priest Of Love, Six Degrees of Separation, And The Band Played On, Richard III, Apt Pupil, Gods and Monsters, Emile, the Da Vinci Code, Doctor Who and even a brief stint in Coronation Street!

Aside from his career, McKellen does a lot of charity work and is a keen LGBT rights activist.
