Nigel Kennedy is a British violinist and viola player, signed to the EMI Classics label.

Born to an extremely musical family, with links in the BBC Symphony Orchestra and a number of star musicians, he started playing instruments at an early age, and studied at both the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music as well as the Juilliard School in New York, with Dorothy DeLay.

Kennedy has been releasing albums since the mid-1980s and still works hard in the studio today, as well as remaining a common fixture on the tour front too. He put out a Best Of album in 2010, which confirmed his status as one of the biggest violinists in the world today.

Preceding a trio of UK shows in May, acclaimed violinist Nigel Kennedy has been confirmed to headline Cheltenham Jazz Festival and BBC Music's Biggest Weekend. Jamming does not make a good concert

The first part with the haunting Polish Jewish piece was powerful and the musicians worked well together. The second half gradually succumbed to the dominance of rather dreary, loud bass playing which, with the master of swing guitarist, hijacked the concert from Nigel. Each piece sounded the same except when Nigel took centre stage with his stunning mercurial riffs. If Nigel had balanced the playing and allowed the cellist to star more, it would not have become so self-indulgent: it became musicians jamming under the force of one guitarist and that was not what people paid for.

A Whole lotta Love!

Having known Nigel, yet not having seen him for 12 Years, I was grateful for the opportunity to see him play in Malvern, his old home town. An awe inspiring Gig followed by an after Concert Party, and some Vodka back at the Hotel, convinced me that I should make it along to the Porthcawl Concert as well. Extraordinary! During a rendition of "Danny Boy" the Audience broke out into a baritone valley Choir humming the Melody. I have never experienced such receptivity, dignity amidst exultation, attunement, standing ovations ushering complete respect for the Artiste and the music as I experienced the sonic balm of calm that exuded from that extraordinary Welsh Audience. Nigel acknowledged that he bounces off that love energy and that the feedback enabled him to even excel in a creative transcendence manner. I'm sure he will be returning one day.
