Tennessee indie-rockers Kings of Leon have spoken out about performing their new material at shows, despite protests from their management and record company.
Kings of Leon are still working on their forthcoming as-yet-untitled fifth album, with a number of new tracks already previewed to their massive audience at London’s Hyde Park show last month. Playing four new tracks at their sell-out, biggest show to date, Kings of Leon didn’t state as to whether the new tracks are to feature on the new album or not.
Speaking to Billboard, frontman Caleb Followill explained, “If we were going to get out there and play a concert and not play new music, it would feel like we had our hands tied, and I think we would be bored with the show.”
The four new tracks aired at the London concert were ‘Immortals,’ ‘Mary,’ ‘Radioactive’ and ‘Southbound’ with each track being hugely appreciated by the packed crowd. Talking about the decision to play the new music, Followill continued. “We didn’t want to go back out there and give ‘em the ‘Only By The Night’ tour, part two. It’s inspiring to be able to go out there and play news songs. Not only are you testing the songs on the crowd, but we have that, ‘Oh, shit!’ moment when we’re looking at each other. Are they gonna like this? Are they gonna sit down because it’s not ‘Use Somebody’?”
Followill described the reaction to the new tracks and said, “the crowd response has been unbelievable,” adding further to the anticipation of the band’s fifth album which is rumoured to have a “beachy” feel to it.
Kings of Leon are confirmed to play a headline slot at the twin-sited V Festival later next month. The group have not commented on nor ruled out playing more new material at the sold-out festival which takes place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire on weekend of August 21st-22nd.
Other acts featuring on the bill are co-headliners Kasabian, as well as Paul Weller, The Prodigy, Doves and Pet Shop Boys.
