Forty Injured As Freak Storm Hits Finland Sonisphere Festival

A massive thunderstorm has injured around 40 festivalgoers – two seriously - at the final Sonisphere festival of the summer in Finland.
The freak thunderstorm hit the Sonisphere site around 4pm on Sunday August 8th and despite only lasting a short time, less than five minutes, trashed the festival’s second stage beyond repair. The storm also brought down tents, ripped up fences and destroyed band equipment, including Motley Crue’s drumkit.
Organisers were forced to abandon the second stage for the remainder of the festival, Motley Crue had no choice but to cancel their performance and Iggy & The Stooges settled for a four-song acoustic set on the Main Stage. Arriving on stage, a much less energetic Iggy Pop announced to the crowd, “We’re a small part of the fucking Stooges” as the trio played through an unusually quiet show with little amplification.
Iron Maiden went on stage two hours later than billed but didn’t at all falter on their set despite the earlier downpour. Talking to a soaked crowd before the band’s finale, Bruce Dickinson praised fans saying, “This is one of the most amazing concerts of my whole life. We were pissed on by the gods and we pissed on the gods right back. For those of you that have rocked we fucking salute you.”
A statement released by Sonisphere UK organisers revealed the number of casualties that were hit by the storm. “Approximately 40 people were injured, two of them seriously so. The injured people are currently receiving treatment in hospital.”
An update has since revealed that the two festivalgoers who were in critical condition have improved in health, although still being treated in hospital.
