Despite the band reforming earlier this year, Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd has revealed that he is “totally broke” with nowhere to live.
Following a 13-year silence, Seattle grunge band Soundgarden has returned. Playing a headline performance at the stateside Lollapalooza festival earlier this year as well as announcing the release of their greatest hit compilation alongside the latest edition of the Guitar Hero video game, Soundgarden are on course to hit the music limelight once again.
However, with things looking up again for the Chris Cornell led band, bassist Ben Shepherd has since revealed that despite the band’s success he is ‘totally broke’ and technically homeless.
Talking to Spin magazine, the bassist revealed that the initial break-up of Soundgarden hit him hard. The split accompanied by the break-up with his girlfriend has left Shepherd relying on friends and studios to keep a roof over his head. When asked about his current address, he said, “Nowhere. Literally. I’ve been sleeping on studio couches and at friends’ houses. I’m totally broke.”
Shepherd also came clean about how he got caught-up in a downward spiral of events, leading to alcohol and drug abuse. He added, "My whole life seemed over. Soundgarden broke up; my other band, Hater, broke up; my fiancée broke up with me; and then I broke three ribs. I got addicted to pain pills, drank a ton, and wound up OD'ing on morphine. I was laid out in my house for five days, and no one knew it."
Soundgarden reformed earlier this year and plan to include their greatest hits compilation album with the new ‘Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’ video game which hits the shelves next month.
