Black Eyed Peas Announced For Super Bowl Half Time Show

R&B band Black Eyed Peas have been confirmed as the official half-time entertainment for this year’s Super Bowl.

The announcement came earlier this week after months of speculation linking the band to the prestigious event. The Super Bowl slot is one of the most coveted in American entertainment, with a yearly television audience of tens (if not hundreds) of million people watching at home. This year, the game will take place at the Dallas Cowboys stadium on February 6th next year.

The Black Eyed Peas are the first mainstream pop act to be picked to perform since Janet Jackson’s performance with Justin Timberlake in 2004, which caused widespread controversy and debate over her supposed ‘wardrobe malfunction.’ Acts to have occupied the half time performance since then have included such musical goliaths as Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Prince, Bruce Springsteen and The Who.

The booking will come as welcome news for the band, who this week entered into another bout of plagiarism claims, this time involving their 2010 single, ‘The Time’. Joel Thomas Zimmerman, who goes by the producing alias of dadmau5, was told of similarities between the song and one of his own after friends tweeted to inform him. After looking more closely at the files, Zimmerman identified links in the waveform of the two songs. Luckily for the band, Zimmerman has taken the widespread claims lightly, claiming that he has no intention to sue.

However, It is not the first time that the Black Eyed Peas have been involved in plagiarism claims. In January 2010 a singer named Phoenix Phenom claimed the band had plagiarised her music for their song “Boom Boom Pow”. Equally, in July 2009 a songwriter named Bryan Pringle filed a lawsuit against the band, claiming that they had borrowed his song for their hit ‘Party All The Time’.
