Sir Paul McCartney received further praise for his glittering career on Sunday at the 33rd annual Kennedy Centre Honours, adding to the star’s huge list of acheivements. The former Beatles member was one of many guests at the event, appearing with not only American TV superstar Oprah Winfrey and President Obama, but with fellow musical legends Dave Grohl, Norah Jones and Steven Tyler.
Macca told the audience ‘"The most important ingredient to making a song work is magic. You've got a melody, you've got words, but on the most successful songs, there's a sort of magic glow that just makes the songs sort of roll out.".
McCartney was then treated to a medley of his own songs played by a variety of different musicians, including ‘Hello, Goodbye’ by No Doubt and with Mavis Staples performing ‘Let it Be’ and ‘Hey Jude’.
Obama paid his tributes to the 68 year old, admitting to the crowd that he was pleased "to honor a man widely considered to be among the greatest songwriters in history."
The honour was just another accolade the rock star has achieved – he is already credited as “the most successful musician and composer in popular music history” by the Guinness Book of Records, voted “Greatest Composer of the Millennium” by BBC News and even has a minor planet named after him – but he accepted the distinction with great pleasure.
The Honors air on US TV on December 28th.
