Gay For Johnny Depp - What Doesn’t Kill You, Eventually Kills You (Album Review)

Wednesday, 09 February 2011 Written by Heather McDaid

At 22 minutes long, Gay For Johnny Depp’s latest release really goes down the road of quality over quantity for their 11 track release, ‘What Doesn’t Kill You, Eventually Kills You.’

From the off I should state, if you’re seeking a soothing, easy listening piece then turn away now. Due to be released on Valentine’s Day, I would also recommend this isn’t the musical gift you’d be looking for to woo your better half. This is a 20 minute assault on your ears that you are more than willing to take if aggression and energy is what you seek.

ImageAfter taking unconventional approaches in their time within the industry, the band pack each track – averaging at two minutes a piece – with different hardcore influences and efforts to produce a thoroughly enjoyable album. Again, enjoyment is based on how crazy you like your music, but who doesn’t agree with “the crazier, the better” these days?

Admittedly, they’re different. Their album ends with their version of Slade’s ‘Cum on, Feel the Noize’, notably tamer than the rest of their offering but it has their own sound doused on the track throughout.

A personal favourite is ‘Humility is For People Who Don’t Comprehend Their Own Mortality’, the shortest track on the album. Maybe it’s because that seems the calmest of the tracks although chaotic in its own way. There are more vocals visible in this track as opposed to the raw violence we hear in most others.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where you’d place Gay For Johnny Depp in music but needless to say they are fearless in their own little world. Their music is exactly “them” in all its anarchic brilliance. It may be a short release but it’s definitely one you could listen to on repeat without tiring of.
