Often described as the nicest man in rock; drummer, guitarist, frontman and probably tea boy too, Dave Grohl can now also be officially described as a ‘Godlike genius’ after collecting his previously announced award at last nights NME bash.
Starting out in the early 90’s as the drummer behind grunge icons Nirvana and taking an extended role on their seminal 1991 album ‘Nevermind’ Grohl came out of Kurt Cobain’s shadow after the legendary frontmans tragic death paved the way for Grohl to push out on his own.
Creating Foo Fighters by putting together a series of tracks where he recorded each part himself and handed out demo tapes just to test the reaction he soon realised he needed a touring band as interest in the debut rose and so began arguably the biggest rock band of the past 15 years. Going from strength to strength and gaining mainstream popularity following the release of 1999’s ‘There’s Nothing Left To Lose’ the Foo’s went on to headline festivals and stadiums all over the World.
Following the release of ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ in 2007, Grohl took a break of sorts, going back to his roots as a drummer. Grohl always maintained that he was a drummer at heart and forming Them Crooked Vultures with good friends Josh Homme and John Paul Jones gave him that chance. Their self titled debut album and live shows selling well.
Following the end of that tour, never one to take a break work began on the latest Foo’s album, ‘Wasting Light’ due out on April 11th.
The ceremony, at Brixton’s O2 Academy saw a wide variety of stars including Paul McCartney and Jack Black paying tribute to Grohl by video as he arrived on stage to a standing ovation. Clearly overwhelmed he remained as humble as ever in his acceptance speech “You guys realise they gave this one to a drummer, right? This one’s for the drummers!”
He went on to dedicate the award to Cobain and showed his still bubbling enthusiasm for playing live when adding “They asked us to play tonight and we thought ‘Yeah, ok sure’. And they said ‘Why don’t you do 4 or 5 songs’ and I said ‘Fuck that, why don’t we play for two fuckin’ hours!’ And I also said ‘Why don’t we play with an actual godlike genius, Mr Roger Daltrey?’”
That was Daltrey’s introduction to join the band on stage for a cover of Mose Allison’s ‘Young Man Blues’ which The Who made famous before the Foo’s launched into their own set.
