Sucioperro - Reflexes Of The Dead (Single Review)

“Wake up, wake up my angel, you are my oxygen”

Seemingly, the title of Sucioperro’s upcoming third record ‘The Heart String & How to Pull It’ is a pretty accurate one. If you thought first single ‘Threads’ and giveaway track ‘Running From All That Doesn’t Tempt You’  were pretty direct arrows to the heart then wait until you hear the latest track released from the album.

‘Reflexes of the Dead’ starts fairly ordinarily with strummed chords but by the time it has launched into fairly up-tempo rock riffage singer J.P. Reid has already made it perfectly clear what direction this song is going on.

ImageThis is a rare thing, a song of unmistakable sincerity. When J.P. starts singing the opening lines of “I sensed you lost a little something along the way, reaching for someone you could balance on” it immediately ingrains itself in your head and in your affections, tapping at your emotions like a cat stranded outside in the rain would at a window. Lyrically this is on another level to many of Sucio’s earlier material. J.P. Reid has always been a great songwriter but seemingly is only getting better.

The gorgeous vocals, aided greatly by backing from his bandmates Stewart Chown and Fergus Munro carry the song along its powerful way. There are plenty of artists who write songs that aim straight for your tender side but few that manage to come across like they really mean it in the way that Sucioperro have managed to do here. Whereas in the past many Sucio songs have been aggressive to the point of including screaming vocals and metallic riffs, this one has nothing more than some overdriven guitar to boast in the heaviness department and is searingly melodic rather than searingly loud.

Previous single ‘Threads’ may have suggested that Sucio had gone pop, this basically confirms that suspicion. Don’t take this as some act of selling out though. This band is one of the most honest and hard working acts out there and everything they do comes with love for their fans and out of their passion for music.

Soon all their fans, and indeed many people who are not yet fans but soon will be, shall be filled with love for this song. You see, it just works. You don’t need to get in some kind of special zone to listen to it. Nor do you have to worry about remembering the words if you go and see the band live because it’s as catchy (in a good way not a cheesy Girls Aloud-esque way) as the common cold. Love makes Sucioperro write wonderful songs. It seems only polite that we should love them back.

Stereoboard Single Rating: 9/10
