Marc Robillard - Left London (Album Review)

'Left London' is the much anticipated follow up to Marc Robillard's debut EP 'Paper Airplanes' (2005). Released on March 29th and inspired by his time living in England, this stunning album includes 13 honest, intimate tunes that are bound to tug at your heartstrings.

The album opens with 'Contagious', a single that not only demonstrates Robillard's captivating voice but when paired with a perfect melody seems fitting to any American TV drama.

'Love Song' follows, a big song with a catchy melody that will no doubt please fans and intrigue new listeners. 'Unfold' and 'Ghost' come next; two heartfelt, beautiful songs that continue the raw theme throughout this album. The singer-songwriter's lyrics and vocals grow from intricate pieces to wonderful tracks that leave a lasting impression.

ImageThe fifth song 'Without You' includes simple lyrics and an appreciated string-section. This sounds like a radio-friendly track that you can surely expect to hear around soon! 'Everstop' is a touching song with outstanding imagery that builds up to an unexpected ending. Marc Robillard succeeds here where many others have failed. 'OK' is one of the many pop-influenced tracks on this record and displays Robillard's talents as both a lyricist and vocalist. This heat-warming song was definitely a favourite of mine.

Next is 'Conclude'; Another pop-influenced number that somehow stays close to Marc Robillard's roots. This is an outstanding musical track that is a prime example of what the LA-based singer-songwriter can actually do. 'The Worst Day of My Life' is simply beautiful. Contrasting completely from the previous song, Robillard's vocals are heart-breaking and this is one of the best on the album, both lyrically and musically.

Pop influences shine through yet again in 'Bleed' that sounds like it belongs on the radio or on a movie soundtrack. A big song that stands out on this album. 'Fall Away' slows the pace here with heart-breaking, beautiful vocals and words that challenge some of the best in the business. Definitely my favourite. 'Crazy' is a perfect pop record that include Marc's ever-powerful vocals. Serious contender for another single.

Finally, an updated version of 'So Much More', the fan favourite. This light, straightforward song is a brilliant end to an album that displays both pop and alternative influences. With his unique, inspiring and soulful work, you should keep an eye out for Marc Robillard. Definitely one for the acoustic, meaningful and alternative music lovers.
