Scumbag Philosopher - Scumbag Philosopher (Single Review)

Scumbag Philosopher (formerly the hilariously titled Fuck Dress) do like to keep things simple it seems. The duo behind the wonderfully titled 'God is Dead so I Listen to Radiohead” grumble their way through this slab of dirty avant-garde rock without really doing anything that catches the ear. Or at least it seemed after the first listen.  Stick this on in the background while doing the dishes and all you’ll hear is a simple drumbeat backed up by a dribbling vocal and a guitar riff that would make Hendrix turn.

ImageHowever, this is where a song like this hides its secret weapon. It’s not designed to be heard. It’s designed to be listened to. The first listen of this song, the all-important first impression was, quite frankly, uninspiring, but with each future listen you can start to unravel the different layers behind the music. You start to see the intriguing social commentary, which you feel  should have been obvious first time around, especially where words dripped in venom that poke holes into the way that British people are today such as “It’s not like the olden days/Golden, respectful times” start to slowly burrow into the mind. This is, of course, before they abandon the burrowing and take an electric drill to it with the crescendo repetition of the word “Scum” several times during this three-minute tracks climax.

Scumbag Philosopher have a pretty unique sound. But you feel like you should have heard it before. Of course, if you haven’t heard it before, then don’t judge it on the first listen. You’ll hate it. Stick it on repeat, let it take you over and drag you down with it.
