The Cribs Discuss Johnny Marr Departure And Future Plans

The Cribs have discussed the reasons for Johnny Marr’s departure from the group, claiming that recent sessions with the guitarist “weren’t really working.”

Speaking on their official website Thecribs.com, Ryan, Ross and Gary Jarman declared that they had attempted to embark on sessions for a second album with the ex-Smiths guitarist, but the resultant tracks were lacking.

An official statement from the band read: "There were definite intentions of continuing on together and making another record. We even went into the studio with Edwyn Collins again last spring and started recording some stuff, but it just wasn't really working. We were all pretty burnt at that point and that is why we decided that after eight years and four records we should take some time off."

The band went on to state that at that time it had made sense for them to revert back to performing as a three-piece. They said: “During that time we all intended on working on other projects. At some point late last year we just casually got together out in Portland as a three-piece and it was so much fun. Johnny had started working on a solo record in the time off, and it just seemed like the right time to go our separate ways."

"We have a bunch of new songs and are embracing the lo-fi again. It never was about fancy studios and LA and all that. We are back in our usual environment and feeling good about it. We've got everything we need."

Marr joined the band to record their 2008 LP ‘Ignore The Ignorant’. Speaking about his departure on Twitter yesterday (April 11th), the guitarist said: “Thank You to everybody for all the best wishes to me and The Fellas. More good things to come from us all.”

When a fan recommended that he should go back to The Cribs, Marr declared that he will never close the door completely on the band, saying: “Thanks. Nothing is ever over for me. Same with Modest Mouse.”
