It looks as though the record books will have to be amended as U2 now claim to own the highest grossing tour ever.
The success of U2 rumbles on as this sunday, April 10th, saw the Irish rockers' lastest stop on their 360 tour smash through the previous record held by the Rolling Stones. The performance at the Estadio Morumbi in Brazil's Sao Paulo pushed U2 past the £341 million ($558 million) mark which was previously set by the Stones on their 2005-2007 Bigger Bang tour. It is expected that Bono and the gang could rack up an astonishing £428 million ($700 million) by the time the tour closes in Canada on July 30th.
Billboard.com reported that with U2 selling seven million tickets for their 110 shows, the band are likely to have the record for highest attended tour. The Rolling Stones currently hold the title for that too, a massive 6.4 million attendance for their 'Voodoo Lounge' tour in 1994-1995.
Speaking about the record, U2's band manager Paul McGuinness had this to say. "(Its) Something we're very proud of having set. And to set it with a further 20-plus shows to go on the tour is kind of mind-blowing. It means that it's a record that will probably never be outstripped."
Revealing the level of commitment the band has to their live shows, McGuinness continued. “We were always very conscious that we had two parallel careers, as recording artists and as live performers, and each was absolutely vitally important," he said.
Admitting how serious U2 take their “world-domination”, McGuinness revealed. "In our own kind of quiet way we were all somewhat military about it. We would talk about territories and conquering them, and if there was somewhere that was slower to come along, we would go back there and work it again. Bono is kind of a closet General Patton. So, for us, this is a real victory."
The brains behind U2's massive 360 Tour is tour producer Arthur Fogel. He highlights the fact that ticket prices are as low as £18 (£30) along with the unique stage design has helped with the huge audiences. "There are so many factors that play into it: the unique nature of the production, the ticket pricing model, the strategy of where to play and how many tickets are in the market."
